Herb Container Garden Techniques
October 11, 2008
Establishing a herb container garden for your home not only gives you the chance of growing fresh herbs year-round for a assortment of uses, in addition it provides an eco-friendly method of decorating your patio, sunroom or balcony. Using ornamental ceramic pots, clay urns, wooden window boxes or any distinctive item that can serve as a plant holder for your herb container garden will add color and fragrance wherever you decide to place them.
Benefits Of A Herb Container Garden
There are plenty of reasons for having a herb container garden versus a traditional herb garden in your yard. Besides having the ability of growing fresh herbs throughout the year right at your fingertips, the herb container garden, once set up with the proper supplies, requires little care. With proper light, soil, drainage and water, the plants tend to take care of themselves. Additionally, herb plants tend to be mostly pest free. A herb container garden can be a convenient way of growing fresh herbs without all of the work a traditional garden requires. The containers should be portable so they can be moved inside during cold weather, they’re decorative and fragrant, they take up little space and they’re good for the environment.
Creating A Herb Container Garden
Creating a herb container garden for your home can be easily achieved with just a few supplies. Basically, the main item to be concerned with is the container itself. It must be large enough to accommodate the plants, stones and soil but it must also be a size that is easily moved from the outside to the inside during cold weather. If you plan to have a herb container garden only during the warmer months that are conducive to gardening, then how large and how portable the container is will not be an issue. Regardless of the portability of the container, it must provide excellent drainage for the plants.
Putting Together A Herb Container Garden
Once you’ve selected the type of herbs you want for your herb container garden, depending on the size of the container used, place several small rocks or stones inside the container which will help with water drainage. Fill the container with an appropriate amount of soil, place the herb plants inside, add a little water if the potting soil is very dry and then add more potting soil. Place the container in a location that will provide full sunlight and water only as necessary.
Choosing the Right Hummingbird Feeder
October 11, 2008
You have learned how to make nectar to feed hummingbirds, but what is the best way to feed them? All bird feeders are not created the same and hummingbird feeders are special types that are specifically suited to their feeding habits. If the hummingbird cannot reach the nectar they will not come back to feed. You don’t want other animals eating the nectar either. These are some of the considerations that should be made when deciding on the style of feeder that you want to use.
Types of Hummingbird Feeders
With the many types of bird feeders on the market today it is not difficult to find a feeder that is made specifically for the hummingbird. When buying a feeder, remember that hummingbirds love bright colors, especially the color red. Hummingbird feeders should be made to hold the nectar in a way that the hummingbird can get to the nectar without drawing other insects or unwanted creatures. These feeders come in a wide range of prices and are easily affordable by all. Feeders can be made from different types of material. Most often they are made of plastic, wood, and glass. Plastic feeders are usually easy to care for, but they do tend to fade with time. Wooden feeders are beautiful and provide a pleasant feel to your garden or anywhere that you decide to place them. Wooden feeders require extra care and are a little harder to clean but are worth the effort. Glass feeders can provide some of the brightest colors which hummingbirds love. These types of feeders are very artistic and provide a different look to the area that you place them in. They also tend to be somewhat easier to clean than the wooden feeders.
Hummingbird Feeder Safety
There are a few guidelines specific to hummingbird feeders. Hummingbird feeders that are not cleaned can cause diseases for these sweet birds. Feeders should be cleaned each time that you fill them. Use a vinegar and hot water solution to clean all parts of the feeder. Rinse the feeder well with clear warm water then let dry before replacing the nectar. Change the nectar when you start to see it become cloudy. Some experts recommend changing the nectar every 3 - 7 days. To keep ants, bees, wasps, and other insects from the feeder use a little mineral oil on the wire to the feeder and on the ports of the feeder. A word of caution when using the type of feeders that goes on windows! There have been occasions when hummingbirds have flown into windows that had a dark film on them. If you do decide to hang your feeder outside a window make sure that is has no tint to it.
Each type of feeder has some really good aspects. Only you can choose the feeder that is right for you and your décor. Don’t be afraid of having to keep them clean and safe for the hummingbirds. The joy of having these beautiful birds in your yard or garden far out weighs the job of maintaining the feeders. Get the bird feeder that is right for you and enjoy!
The Art Of Knitting
October 11, 2008
If you want to make use of your time and start a new hobby, then one of the best hobbies to learn is knitting. This hobby is particularly useful if you have a large family and want to discover ways to save money on clothing and other accessories. The art of knitting is also a good way to relieving stress and this can even give one a sense of accomplishment as soon as they are able to create products they normally see in the shops. Read on and discover the places where you can find the best resources for your knitting project.
If you want o have a resource where you can be able to have some help on knitting then you can visit www.hobbynetworksite.com. You will be able to learn how to tie knots in addition to finding the right yarn that will help you get the job done. Further you will also be able to learn what the types of needles are and which type of needles and crochet hooks you should be using, and even learn how you can manipulate the yarn to be able to create different stitches to get the results that you want to have.
Looking through a knitting related blog is also a great place to learn to knit. If you want to learn more about how to knit for the many charities that may be in your area, or if you’ve been practicing your skills and want to know where you can sell your new creations, you may want to check out sources like The Daily Knitter to find out how you can become better at knitting. You can also get links to clubs in your area that are made up of people who share the same interests. There are also a number of community calendars and blogs on the site that will help to point in the right direction.
There are many tools you need when learning to knit and one of them is the gauge card. The gauge card will assist you in manipulating the needle through the yarn, and this will help get your hands familiar to creating the various patterns that you want to make. These gauges can be made from with metal or plastic, and they can be used to determine the needle sizes that you will need to use for each project due to the fact the needles tend to get worn out and their sizes change with continued use. The use of gauges also help you find the needles that feel most comfortable in your hands as you are learning to knit. Sometimes, you may find that the aluminum or metal needles which are very commonly used are not ideal for you. This way you can discover that perhaps a walnut needle, a bamboo or plastic needle may be more suited for you.
Warhammer 40K - Basic Army Theory
October 11, 2008
When beginning a table top miniature war game, your army is a big investment in time, money, and effort. Here’s a few tips for new Warhammer 40k players to help you get started on the right foot.
First, Know The Rules.
Obtain the main book and your codex of choice. Read them both thoroughly before you start building an army. Having a pretty clear idea of how it all is supposed to work makes it much easier to put together a decent starting force.
Decide What You Like.
It may sound obvious, but remember as you’re designing your army list, start with models you like. If you don’t like the models you buy, then you probably won’t be as motivated to get them built and painted, and you probably won’t enjoy fielding them as much. Additionally, the vast majority of units in 40k can be made useful, so pick out a few favorites that you’ve just gotta have and go from there. You need something that will deal with all the main types of enemy.
That would be heavy infantry (like Space Marine Terminators), horde infantry (like ork boyz), Psykers (like Chaos Marine Sorcerers), light tanks (like Eldar Vypers), and heavy tanks (like Necron Monoliths). You can deal with them long range or up close, just be able to kill it. Then once you’ve got at least 1 thing to do that, find 1 or 2 more that can pull it off in a pinch, preferably one of your other existing units. Don’t let one squad getting wiped out cripple the rest of your army.Cover the mission objectives.
Now that you can kill most enemies, that covers 2 out of the 6 basic missions. Now you need to make sure you have a few units that can take and hold objectives. Being able to do that will keep you covered for the other 4 basic missions.
Proxy first, buy later.
Make yourself a list, try to proxy it with stuff you have handy before shelling out the dough. First, try playing a couple games and make sure you like it. Then tweak it a few times. After you feel like you’ve got a decent start, you can make the plunge and start collecting that army. And who knows, maybe I’ll see you on the battlefield!
Making Soy Candles the Easy Way!
October 11, 2008
People choose soy candles for many good reasons. When looking at making candles you will find that soy candles are earth friendly and a renewable resource. What better reasons than these to make this type of candles? All candles produce some soot but soy candles tend to produce less than most. Soy candles are also known to last longer than most conventional candles. Soy candle wax is produced in the United States.
Equipment and Supplies for Making Soy Candles
The type of equipment and supplies you will need to make your soy candles depend on what style you want. You can make pillar type candles, tarts for burners, or container candles.
Container candles are the easiest to make and is the one that will be covered here. The nice thing about using soy wax is that it cleans up well with soap and water.
What You Will Need
You will need a microwave safe container, preferably a microwave safe glass measuring cup to hold and melt your wax, wicks, and a clean container to put your candle in. There are fragrances and dyes specifically for soy wax candles. If you desire these, then make sure you have them ready when creating your candle. A word of caution here, be sure to buy high quality oils that are strong and are specifically for soy candles!
You will also need a wooden spoon, potholders and a clean dry container to put your candle into. Soy wax comes in soft block or in flakes. The best way to purchase this type of wax is in flakes, this allows you to measure the amount of wax needed for different projects.
You are Ready to Create
Now you are ready to go. You have everything together, but how do you know how much wax you will need to melt? By using the microwave safe measuring cup, and by knowing the amount of liquid your container holds you will know the amount of soy wax that you need to melt. If it is a 14 oz. container then you will need approximately 13 oz of melted wax.
Melt the wax in the microwave. Start with a few minutes and continue to check until all the soy wax is melted. During the melting process, if you see you are going to need more wax, then add it to what is already melting. Be sure that all the wax is melted.
While the wax is melting take the wick and place the metal portion into the bottom of your container with just a bit of hot glue. This will adhere quickly so you can use a pencil to keep the wick centered by wrapping a small portion of the wick around the pencil. Secure the pencil to the container.
Once the right amount of wax is melted add the dye and stir to mix well. You may then add your fragrance according to the manufactures suggestions. Once all is mixed pour slowly into your container. Be sure that the wick stays to the center for an even burning candle.
You have just created your first earth friendly and beautiful soy candle. You are ready to make some as gifts so that others may enjoy these wonderful candles. Don’t forget to add a little note about clean up for the container after the candle has been used, and about how soy candles are earth friendly!
Baby Bedding Sets Are Simpler and Are Not So Expensive
October 11, 2008
The options for crib bedding are nearly endless, and you’ll find literally hundreds of choices, from girl’s crib bedding to baby boy bedding to unisex bedding sets. For ease and cost-savings, you should really consider buying a bedding set. Baby crib bedding sets are exactly the same as buying a “bed in a bag” for an adult’s bed. Buying a baby bedding set will give you more confidence that everything will look right together, and some extra (matching) crib sheets are easy to find.
Keep in mind that different bedding sets are going to use different fabrics, colors, and styles. Silk might be a first choice, but keep in mind that it’s going to be a lot more expensive and harder to clean than cotton or flannel. Whether you just like changing things around frequently, or you’re redecorating the nursery for a new baby, bedding sets make it easy because you can change the look of the nursery considerably by just switching bedding sets.
Obviously, you will need to think about the gender of your new baby and buy bedding that will match. There’s a bit of a double standard in crib bedding, though. Pink is a no for a boy, but blue is OK in a girl’s room. Manufacturers pay close attention to buying trends (they don’t want to make something no one will buy), so you probably won’t have any problems finding what you want. In a boy’s nursery, you’ll often find themes like football baby bedding. If you want a bright and vibrant nursery for your little boy, you should have no problem. There are plenty of bedding sets in greens, blues, oranges, and reds.Girls’ themes will usually incorporate characters like princesses, ballerinas, or fairies. While pink is the first color associated with a girl’s nursery, purple, yellow, and even blue are also common choices. For a gender neutral nursery, consider abstract prints in neutral colors, animals, or stars and moons.
Usually you’ll be able to find something you like, but if you have your heart set on a particular style and just can’t find it anywhere, you can look into a custom set instead. Or if you sew, you can make the bedding yourself. Buying baby bedding can be a challenge, but as long as you keep your budget and preferences in mind, you should be able to find what you want.
THE SPORTS DAY IN MY SCHOOL
October 11, 2008
The sports day is the most eagerly awaited day in the school. It provides an opportunity to all students to display their talents.
Preparations for our sports day start a month in advance. All the students are agog with excitement in weeks preceding the sports day and the events of that great day continue to be discussed and debated for weeks after wards.
Our school has a spacious playground at the back of the school building. On the day before the sports day the playground is prepared and decorated with coloured paper ribbons, flags and festoons, so that it wears a festive look.
I still remember the last year’s sports day in my school, when I was in tenth Standard. It was held on 24th December. Sports were to start at 7 a.m. But all the students and teachers had assembled on the playground by 6 a.m. Parents, guardians and special invitees began to come after 6.30 a.m. They were seated in a specially erected pandal.
The events of the day started exactly at 7 a.m. They included various athletic items like 100 meters race, cycling race, hurdle race, three legged race, discus throw, shot put, high jump and long jump as well as games like kabaddi, kho-kho, langadi and dodge ball. There were special races for girls like lemon and spoon race, sack races, potato gathering and threading the needle. There was also the game of the musical chairs specially for the guests. A very lively and interesting running commentary of the events was given by our English teacher. Participants were cheered and applauded by the remaining students. Great fun was provided by the item of Musical Chairs in which our Principal, a few teachers, guardians and parents participated.
By 6 p.m. the last final event was over and it was time for the prize distribution. Sir Sunil Gavaskar, the famous cricketer, was the chief guest. He congratulated the participants for taking part in the sports and praised the students of the school for their discipline and good behaviour. He then gave away the prizes. Each prize winner was cheered and applauded by the spectators.
At the end of the prize distribution there was rhythmic clapping to the chant of “we want holiday”. Thunderous cheers greeted our Principal as he graciously obliged and announced over the mike that the next day would be a school holiday.
STUDENT’S INDISCIPLINE
October 11, 2008
Students’ indiscipline is one of the burning problems faced by modern India.
The problem is faced at two levels. At the narrow level there is the problem of classroom indiscipline in the form of making noises, thumping desks, throwing paper darts, imitating the sounds of birds and animals, eating peanuts and playing truant. Such misbehavior is often faced by new and inexperienced teachers. But a good teacher can deal with such misbehavior successfully with a little tact and understanding.
Such classroom misbehavior does not pose so serious a problem as the students’ indiscipline in schools and colleges at wider level. It is in the form of strikes and demonstrations which sometimes turn violent and lead to stone-throwing, damaging property and violent clashes. Students, teachers and invigilators What are the causes of such serious students’ unrest?
Students may have genuine grievances like lack of basic amenities, exorbitant fees, donations and capitation fees, corruption and malpractices in the examinations, want of sufficient teachers, dull and dry teaching in the form of lectures or giving of notes, high-handed attitude of teachers or heads, etc. If these genuine grievances are not redressed, students’ unrest may erupt violently. The most important cause of the students’ unrest is the feeling of utter frustration experienced by students on account of the great difficulty in getting jobs after studying so hard and so long. Underpaid and overworked teachers working in over-crowded classes cannot provide the necessary attention and instruction. Parents are too busy to guide or control their children. Political parties exploit the students’ unrest for achieving their political ends. They first trouble the water and then fish in the troubled water. How is the burning problem to be solved? First of all, political parties must leave the students alone. Parents must exercise their moral influence. All the genuine grievances of the students must be redressed. Good teaching, smaller classes, personal attention, abolition of the present, out-dated system of examination, facilities for games and other constructive activities, job-oriented education and clean and efficient administration will go a long way towards solving the problem of indiscipline.
EXAMINATIONS
October 11, 2008
Examinations have become an indispensable part of our present educational system. A student is subjected to examinations right from the beginning of his education and has to go through all sorts of examinations until and after he completes his education. The innocent toddler has to go through a test to secure admission to the K.G. class. A young man seeking recruitment after his education is completed depends on some sort of test or examination. Thus examinations have assumed an importance out of proportion to their actual educational value. The chief anxiety of a student is not how to study but how to prepare for and pass his examination; and that of the teacher is not how to teach or what to teach but how to coach his pupils for their examinations. A school or a college is judged not by its overall contribution to the all-round progress of its pupils but by its examination results. Thus examinations have become the be-all and end-all of our educational system. Because of their exaggerated importance, examinations have become a veritable nightmare for our pupils.
Thus, our examinations kill all interests of students in study. They put a high premium on memory. They encourage cramming. Luck, the student’s own health and the subjectivity and the mood of the examiner are factors which can play havoc with a student’s career.
Examinations of today are games of chance, mere gambles, and are sometimes known to fail scholars and pass dunces. We need to overhaul the entire present system of examinations in the best interest of our students. The element of chance must be eliminated as much as possible. Instead, a system of evaluation of the student’s overall performance and progress throughout the year should be introduced.
Lastly, the degree-job nexus must be ended. Those who do not want to pursue higher studies and instead want to take up jobs, should be provided both in-job and out-of-the-job training which would help them to achieve the skill and knowledge necessary for the job and get promotion.
