Organic Gardening Ideas

September 30, 2008

Instead of chemicals in your soil and on your food, why not try organic gardening?Begin with just a few plants in pots or a small garden area, tuck a few vegetables in your flower beds, or go really wild and make your whole yard into a garden!

Actually, if it’s your first garden, it’s better to start small.  Gardeners have a tendency to plantmore than they can reasonably care for – everything looks so great in the catalogs!  But even though gardening is a lot of fun and a satisfying pastime, it’s also a lot of work.Part way through the growing season you may wish you’d been a little less enthusiastic in your planting.  It’s better to work your way up to that huge garden!

On Location…

Like the real estate agents are fond of saying, “It’s all about location, location, location. You can find plants that will gorw in the shade, but usually just flowers. Most vegetables need lots of sun.Ther right amount of sunshine is one thing you can’t provide artificially. Even electrical lights wouldn’t really do the trick, and one could hardly call that practical anyway.

Any garden has to have ample sunshine to thrive.  Put your pots or garden plot where the plants will get at least 6 hours of sun a day for best results.  While it’s nice to locate the garden close to the house for easy access, shade from the house or trees may not make that possible.  Sunshine has priority over easy access.

Plants can’t sit in water, so besides ample sunshine, a garden location should drain well.Having fertile soil in the garden area is a big plus, but if needed, soil addments can be added to improve soil.

Down and Dirty

Adding compost will help your soil no matter what type it is.To help the plants grow, you can use natural fertilizers and organic materials to improve the soil.Double digging or tilling materials into the soil will easily mix them in where roots can reach them since most vegetable roots are in the top 6 inches of soil.

Time to Plant

Seed catalogs and nurseries are brimming with all types of vegetables. You should not only choose vegetables you and your family will enoy eating, but be careful to choose plants that will grow well in your area. For example, some long season crops like sweet potatoes wouldn’t do well up north, while a cool climate crop like peas might not do well in the deep south.

Organic material mulched around your vegetables will discourage weeds from growing, help conserve water, plus add humus and nutrients to the soil.It helps the soil, keeps the weeds down, and helps your plants grow better!

Don’t Let Them Bug You

Where there’s lovely young plants, there’s bugs looking for a meal.Caterpillars and bad bugs can be hand picked off plants. Another option is to spray them loose with plain or soapy water..

Not all bugs are bad, and some are even beneficial such as ladybugs, green lacewings, praying mantis, spiders and wasps since they eat insects that try to eat your vegetables.

Companion planting with insect repellant plants such as marigolds or nasturtiums can also help keep bugs away from your garden.

It’s more reasonable to learn to live with some imperfections.Taste is what’s important. A vegetable doesn’t have to be 100% perfect to taste 100% wonderful.  You can cut off any problem spots before eating it.

No Weeds Permitted Here!

A weed is really just “a plant growing in the wrong place. That tells it like it is.If you didn’t plant it, it’s a weed. Pull it up or till it under.Employ whatever method you desire, but just be sure to get the weeds out of your organic garden. There is only so much water and nutrients in the soil to go around, and weeds steal some your vegetable plants could be using.

Ready, Set, Garden!

The right location, good soil, plants that grow well in your climate, and keeping the garden weed and bad bug free are the ingredients for a great organic garden.  Growing an organic garden is a wonderful way to put great tasting food in your diet.Get out there and grow your own!

Making Deliciously Scented Candles

September 30, 2008

By adding scented candles to any room you can set the mood for people in the room.  Scented candles can stimulate, relax, and help to bring back memories of good times.  A very subtle scented candle is more attractive to many people. They can bring about a change in mood without bringing awareness to the reason for the change.

Using Scents in Your Home Made Candles

It is important that when adding scents to your candles that you add those scents specifically made for candles or pure essential oils.  Other types of scents have additives that can affect how your candle burns or how the scent smells once heated with paraffin.

It is recommended that when you first start making scented candles that you use only one scent.  By doing so you are able to experiment with the amount of oil that you will need to use to obtain the scent that you desire.

The usual ratio of wax to scent is one pound of wax to ½ -1 oz. of essential oil or candle scent.  If you want a stronger scented candle you will need to find a special wax that doesn’t sweat the oil.

Scents are added after the wax has been melted but before pouring the wax into your mold, container, or free form candle.  This allows the scent to mix evenly throughout your candle.  Remember to have a small amount of the scented wax to use for topping off your candle. Paraffin candles do tend to shrink some in the middle after hardening.

Experimenting to Find Your own Personal Scent

Don’t be afraid to experiment with creating scents.  When creating your own scents you will need a medicine dropper, small glass dish, toothpicks, cotton swabs, small brown bottle or bottles, different essential oils and some ground coffee.

Remember these are for candles so you don’t want to mix these oils with bases. Note that good essential oils can be a little expensive but they go a long way.  There are many places to buy essential oils such as your local craft store.

Once you have everything assembled, place paper under your working area; old newspapers work well for these projects. In the small glass dish place two drops of the main essential oil that you want to use.  Put a small drop of another essential oil that you have chosen to blend with the first oil into the glass dish. Mix both oils in the dish with a toothpick.  Walk away from the oils and smell the coffee to clear the mingling fragrances from nose.  Once you return to the dish, smell the oils from a distance, rather than placing your nose too close, to get a better idea of how the fragrance you have created smells. You can mix any combination of oils using this technique to determine your likes and dislikes.

Once you have achieved the fragrance you love, mix the oils in the same manner or ratio that you used when creating it. For example if you used 2 drops of bergamot and 1 drop of rose, you may mix 2 oz of bergamot with 1 oz of rose to create enough scent for your candle.

Remember that you only use ½ - 1 oz of oil to a pound of wax. Use caution and never use more than this amount unless you are using a special wax that allows more oil to be added.  This is because essential oils are flammable.

Once you have created your fragrance, store the oil in a small glass brown bottle in a cool area to protect the oils from the light and extreme temperatures.  Let the oil infuse for approximately three days prior to use.  Test the oil on a cotton swab to see how much, if any, the fragrance has changed since storing it.  Some change usually occurs.

Well you have done it! You have created a special fragrance that is of your own design to be used in your candles.  There will be no stopping you now.  Remember, as with any project, safety first!

Save Cash By Discovering Where To Buy Little Girls Clothes On Sale

September 30, 2008

Discount baby girls clothes should be viewed as a bargain that you can’t pass up. The problem with waiting for bargain baby girls clothing is that you might lose out on the most common sizes. Still shopping while there are discounts in the store is always a brilliant move as you can spend less and get more.

The key is keeping a vigilant eye for those price slashing baby girls clothing bargains. Clothing stores are having a difficult time at the moment so most clothes are going to be on discount and the best part is getting a rate cut on an already discounted outfit.

Bargains make shopping fun as it makes things that were once out of reach, suddenly whithin reach. It is just about you being smart in the present so that you can make sure that you will be able to afford any future needs.

Shopping can be exciting if you are not too worried about breaking the bank. And little girls need to have a reasonable amount of clothes, as they need to be changed more than once a day while they are babies.

This in turn makes it necessary for you to have plenty of clothes that they can change into. The best thing is to keep a washing schedule so that you can be sure there is clean clothes available. This way you can cut down on the cost of having to buy new outfits. Even considering the option of getting second hand little girls clothes would be wiser so that you are able to buy new little girls clothing at a later date.

Purchasing Out Of Season Can Be The Greatest Savings For Baby Girls Outfits

The best discounts on baby girls clothes is that which is out of season or almost out of season. Purchasing this way can be seen as making a future investment as you will buy clothes that will fit your infant in the future. Most moms and dads tend to miss these sales as the current baby fashion carries them away.

While some baby girls clothing is reasonably priced other clothing can be a bit expensive. So if you look for these out of season discount baby girls clothing you will see that you can save on the clothing budget. You should also think about selling your baby’s clothing when she outgrows them so that you are able to make some money to buy her new ones. This way you are spending less than what you would normally, had you not sold those clothes. However it all depends on whether or not you have money in the bank to constantly buy new clothes.

Serious Things to Consider When Looking for a Booster Seat

September 30, 2008

As a loving and caring parent, how you wished you’d spend all of your time with your son and daughters, you love to always play with them, spend time with them, bond with them, and always keep them company. Hence, you carry them wherever you go, and you bring them on trips through your car.

However, in the outside world, you’ll never know what may happen, and if you bring your child with you all the time, you’d most likely put them in danger rather than keeping them safe at home. I know you like to spend lots of time with your children and you also want them to be very safe no matter where they are–whether playing or in the car.

Several studies have reported that as numbers of cars and car owners are continuously increasing each day, one of the primary causes of children’s accidents and deaths are due to a car crash. This is so because when a car accident occur, a child whom is the more vulnerable than adults, would most likely obtain the largest impact, and as dependent as they can be, they cannot help themselves to survive. Hence, putting an end to the life of an innocent little angel.

Accidents – they happen even when you least expect them. Well, that’s why they are called accident, they are unexpected and undesirable events. Obviously, no one wants them, except when the term is used for “accidentally bumping into your crush.” Kidding aside, accidents are often unwanted, yet they come though they were never welcome. You won’t know when they would happen to you, so  it is recommended that you’ll always be prepared and alert.

Preparedness doesn’t mean you’d just sit there, wait and accept this unwanted event. Being prepared means to take steps to avoid having an accident, or to avoid getting seriously injured if you are in one.

Because children are still largely dependent on adults, they can’t do these preparations all by themselves. Thus, as a parent, this is one of your tasks. You don’t want to bump into an accident, and regret in the end that you have failed to prepare the security of your children.

Booster seat is one type of a child car seat, and it is widely known in the market, and most of the parents use them to protect their children from probable danger. They trust their children’s life on this piece of equipment. Not until an emotional video was uploaded on You Tube by a mother of a 3-year old kid named Kyle. In this video, she blamed the death of his young child to the malfunction of her child’s booster seat.

During the car accident they had on May 2005, Kyle was seated in a booster seat, which she thought would protect her child in such cases. However, it had functioned otherwise. The seatbelt was buckled but upon impact it unlatched.

Because of that accident, she urged all parents who are still using booster seats to protect their kids to buy a 5-point harness instead. A 5-point harness provides more security and protection to your lovable kids. A Britax car seat or a Maxi-Cosi car seat are very positive choices for a parent who wants to keep their child safe…very safe!

A baby’s christening or baptism is a very special occasion.  It is the very first step in their spiritual life.  It’s important for the parents, godparents and family members to create lasting momentos for the baby since they are too young to have their own first-hand memories.

There are always the popular items that are known to make treasured keepsakes, but there are many other ideas that might get overlooked.  For example, saving one of the invitations that were mailed to guests will make a wonderful momento to be placed in a special album .

Here is a list of some other baptism and christening items that can be used as  memorabeliacreating treasured memories for years to come.

Maintaining A Hydroponics Vegetables Greenhouse

September 28, 2008

There is one “friendly to the environment” growing method, which is very easy for anyone to learn, and that is hydroponics. Would starting a vegetable greenhouse using hydroponics be an option? Even small children have been taught to practice hydroponics in a classroom setting and if they can do it, so can you.

Hydroponics Is Really Healthy For The Environment And For Your Family As Well

Using hydroponics not only enables you to enjoy bountiful fresh fruits and vegetables, but also saves water and benefits the environment by reducing the release of harmful pesticides and herbicides into the atmosphere. Lettuce, tomatoes, chilli peppers, bean sprouts are just some of the examples of easy crops to grow.

When you choose a hydroponics vegetables greenhouse, you will be able to enjoy vegetables and fruits all year round.  Imagine having all the fresh herbs you want.  You can have a continuous supply of your favorite herbs such as basil, oregano, thyme, chives, chervil, parsley, sorrel, mint, sage, cilantro and dill and many other herbs.

Advantages Of Using Hydroponics

A couple of advantages that the hydroponics growing method has over conventional field crops is that the roots are always exposed to oxygen, water and nutrients in a controlled environment.  Instead of setting up a sprinkler system or hauling the hose around outside, you can conserve water by growing your plants using the hydroponics growing method.

For a field crop, the quality of its exposure to water will determine how much oxygen the plants are getting.  Not enough water and the plant will dry up from too much air and oxygen while too much water will not let the plant gets the oxygen it needs.  A crop field can compete with a hydroponics plant for growth only if the soil and watering system is excellent.

Air Fertilization for your Greenhouse

There are some special considerations that are involved with a hydroponics vegetables greenhouse and that includes the fact that during the winter, the levels of carbon dioxide can be lower in the middle of the hydroponics vegetables greenhouse and that means those center plants will not grow as much as the others.  You can remedy this through the practice of enriching the greenhouse atmosphere with carbon dioxide, a practice known as air fertilization.

No gardening experience is necessary to reap the full benefits of a hydroponics vegetables greenhouse. A hydroponics vegetables greenhouse gives you the controlled environment that can meet your family’s needs.

Cross stitch is simply good therapy!

September 28, 2008

I always thought so but had no proof that cross stitching has therapeutic value that far surpasses its seemingly mundane nature. Now, there is solid anecdotal evidence from the most unexpected space. Fresh from the just completed 2008 Beijing Olympic Games!

It may help alleviate some of our Olympic withdrawal symptoms to know that cross stitch is a hobby popular with Chinese women Olympians, many of whom were gold medalists. Interestingly, these Olympians hail from diverse sports like weight-lifting, diving, pistol-shooters, badminton, basketball, canoeing, athletics and even heavy-weight judo!

The seeming disconnect between cross stitch and the stringent demands of their sports discipline initially invited disapproval from the hard-driving Chinese coaches. But as they say, results speak for themselves.

Liu Chunhong, who won the women’s 62-kg weightlifting gold medal, and has broken five world records on her way to gold, was quoted declaring that she feels the best in the world. Not after winning the medal, but after spending 4 to 5 days finishing her cross stitch piece! Fellow weightlifting gold medalists, Chen Xiexia (48-kg category) and Chen Yanqing (58-kg category) are also avid cross stitch hobbyists. Coach Chen Wenbin now ungrudgingly accepts that cross stitch is not a waste of time but an integral part of the weighting team’s activities.

25m-pistol gold medalist Chen Ying declares that an athlete’s life is very boring. Cross stitch gives her something to look forward to after training hard on the range. After 3 or 4 days, she simply loves her cute piece of handiwork.

Tong Wen, the Chinese judoka who defeated reigning champion Maki Tsukada in the women’s heavyweight judo finals at the Beijing Olympic Games on August 15 to win the gold metal, is needless to say “giant” in build. Yet she feels real feminine whenever she cross stitches!

There you have it, cross stitch is simply good therapy, even for incredibly tough-minded Olympians. Perhaps it is also one of their secret weapons?

Get the idea? Start your baby young!

Making Scented Candles at Home

September 28, 2008

A great many of my friends have been asking me to share the secret of making a scented candle at home, though I tell them repeatedly that it is no great secret. Any web site or online manual can teach you the basics of making scented candles at home, and once you have mastered those, the rest is up to your imagination and creativity. Both these qualities, I have found, increase with experience, and never mind what they say about inborn creativity and genius.

However, since it does appear that plenty of people want to know just what it is that causes my candles to smell so good, I will begin by saying that the process of making a candle with the aroma of your choice is a simple one. As I have said before, the increasing demand for scented candles has caused a lot of enterprising folks to come up with books, magazines and web sites dedicated to the art of candle making.

To begin with, you need the right equipment, though that may seem obvious. I always stress this point because, despite its simplicity, candle making is easy only when you follow instructions correctly. Otherwise, you will find that it can be darned tricky as well!

So, depending on whether you are making a wax or gel candle, you will need enough of it, plus the ‘cooking equipment’, or the equipment needed to melt the wax and mould it. And obviously, you will need the essential oils that will give you the aroma of your choice. In my experience, I have always found it best to combine at least a couple of aromas, though beginners might find it easier to stick to one fragrance initially.

What a beginner definitely should not do is pack the candle with as much fragrance as possible. Most ordinary scented candles contain about 0.5 oz of essential oil, though if you want to intensify the fragrance, you may increase it to one whole ounce. However, any more and the scent that your candle gives will be unbearable, probably making you sick!

A lot of people confess to being intrigued by the scents that I use for my candles. ‘I just can’t place it, but it smells so good,’ is something that I hear all the time. Shall I tell you why? Well, I tend to experiment with the most unlikely combinations, most often based purely on instinct, and end up with a fragrance that is marvelous yet unidentifiable! For instance, the first time I used rose and cinnamon together, I was convinced I was headed for disaster. As it turned out, it became my most popular aroma! Similarly, I combined clove and iris to produce another well-appreciated fragrance. The point is, dear reader, it is largely up to you what fragrance you produce.

Finally, though I stuck to wax candles for a long time, I do believe that soy candles hold the scent much better than wax, and they also burn longer. The process of melting the soy wax is similar to that of ordinary wax, though you will probably need a double boiler. You add the color and scent as usual, and pour it into the mold of your choice. As you probably know, a staggering variety of molds are available in the market today. Once your candle is complete, do send me a sample!

Is The Cobb Portable Grill One-Of-A-Kind?

September 27, 2008

Can you see yourself owning a go-anywhere grill that can not only roast and grill your food, but also look handsome at the same time? What if that grill could also cook an entire chicken or turkey on 8 - 10 briquettes? And, if that grill had a weight of under ten pounds and packed up compactly, that would be wonderful too, wouldn’t it?

You bet it would, and the Cobb Premium Portable Grill handles it all, plus a whole lot more! Due to it’s low weight and awesome efficiency, the Cobb Grill is the perfect take-it-with-you grill. If you are headed to the beach, the RV park, or the tailgate party, take along your Cobb and be set for any grilling that the situation calls for.

Include a couple of the Cobb’s accessories, like the griddle or the frying pan, and you’ll be steaming. pan-frying, and sauteing with the best chefs. I’ve even baked a cake on my Cobb! Two weeks ago, I even cooked a huge breakfast on my Cob Grill, from scrambled eggs and sausage, to french toast and grilled potatoes.

The Cobb Grill’s low charcoal use is well known. At the lakeshore last month I lit my Cobb at about noon, using eight pieces of charcoal, and we cooked a few hots and hamburgers. At five o’clock I was ready to head home, but the Cobb was still ready to cook… without adding more briquettes! Know of any other grill that can do that?

Cleanup is a snap because the Cobb parts are dishwasher safe, and non-stick. The stainless steel and aluminum parts make certain that the Cobb’s cooking area stays hot while it’s outside stays cool enough to handle. You have never used an outdoor cooker like this one!

A fantastic thing about the Cobb Portable Grill is how quickly it can be ready to cook on, as well as how quickly you can clean up and put it away when you are done eating. This makes the Cobb the best choice for whatever trip you’re taking. If you need a grill to take to the mountains, or just to use on your balcony at home, the Cobb Grill is the right choice.

Don’t waste another second before getting the Cobb Portable Grill. It’s a real head turner, and your friends and family will be asking you where you located that wonderful grill. You can spill the beans if you so choose… or keep it to yourself!

Why Is There a Everlasting Appeal for The Artificial Christmas Tree?

September 27, 2008

When thinking of the holidays the first thing that comes to mind is the beautifully decorated Christmas tree.  The real pine Christmas tree is the first thought but the artificial Christmas tree is becoming more popular every year.  Even though life styles have changed over the years and new trends are developing constantly, the artificial Christmas tree has changed from very simple and basic designs into more beautiful and sophisticated designs.  Until recently it was all but impossible to find artificial Christmas trees in their original style.  Sticks with feathers (usually goose or duck) were what the original artificial Christmas trees were made from.  The feathers on the artificial Christmas trees were dyed green to make the artificial Christmas tree look more natural.  The feathers dyed green made the artificial Christmas tree have the look of natural pine needles.  The feather trees have recently started growing in popularity again.  The artificial Christmas tree with the feathers can be found in many more colors and more luxurious.  Many people today are looking for dyed artificial Christmas trees with fashionable colors instead of the natural green look.

The first manufacturers of artificial Christmas trees were brush companies.  Realizing their knowledge and production capabilities, they new the artificial Christmas tree could be mass produced.  The artificial Christmas trees pine needles were made from brush bristles.  Today the pine branches are made from plastic and come in quite a few different colors and sizes.New kinds of artificial Christmas trees are introduced every Christmas season. With new artificial Christmas trees every season, an individual ought be able to find a style of artificial Christmas tree to match their taste.  We even can find artificial Christmas trees that sing and dance, Metallic Trees.

The artificial Christmas tree’s structure was changed during the 1950’s.  It Changed from the original wood to modern metal ones and  ceased to be green. The Christmas tree in the 1950’s had faults and lacked the standards of modern safety and health regulations. During this time the artificial Christmas tree were often painted or made with flammable materials.  The first artificial Christmas trees were very hazardous and unacceptable, the heat from the strings of light could cause the artificial Christmas tree to catch on fire.  This hazard has been corrected with the advance of chemical developments.  The artificial Christmas tree that was once metallic has been replaced with tinsel trees.  Fire retardant materials are used for the artificial Christmas tree.  The tinsel tree makes a very safe addition to your holiday decorations.

The manufactures of artificial Christmas trees realized that as years passed consumers found less and less time to decorate and enjoy the holidays.  They solved some of this problem by inventing an artificial Christmas tree that already has the lights attached.  This solves a couple different problems.  The time consuming of stringing lights on the artificial Christmas tree and also helps eliminate the issues of dealing with blown bulbs.  And we all know that hours can be wasted trying to find that one bulb that keeps the whole string from working.  One of the newest trends in artificial Christmas trees is the fiber optic tree.  This artificial Christmas tree lights up but also changes colors at different time intervals.  The fiber optic artificial Christmas tree is becoming a very popular style because of their simplicity.

The artificial Christmas tree also has another new trend developing.  It is the upside down artificial Christmas tree.  These artificial Christmas trees are marketed for the safety of families.  The artificial Christmas tree can not be reached as easily because they are hung from the ceiling.  This artificial Christmas tree is popular because it takes up less floor space. And we all know this allows the jolly old elf to leave numerous presents.  Even with the interesting features of this artificial Christmas tree, it still hasn’t caught on in today’s society like other types  there are many advantages of using an artificial Christmas tree as compared to using a real tree.  The artificial Christmas trees that are mass produced  means they can be used year after year.

A one time investment allows many years of enjoyment.  The artificial Christmas tree is available in many different colors and many sizes and shapes.  Now the perfect artificial Christmas tree is just a trip to the attic instead of the tree lot.  The biggest plus with the artificial Christmas tree is that the  mess from the falling needles is totally erased.  No more vacuuming dead needles for weeks after the holidays.  Another  major advantage of the artificial Christmas tree is never having to remember to water it.   With this said it is easy to see why the artificial Christmas tree still is growing in popularity  year after year.
