How to Choose Your Newborn Baby Toys with Care

August 31, 2008

One endearing trait that all newborn babies are born with is that they have an innate curiosity regarding their immediate surrounding. It is a lot of fun for parents to notice how their newborn baby study faces of all those who come within their viewing range. In addition, babies are also very intrigued by sights, sounds and the lights around them. To help a newborn baby develop properly, you as a parent must be able to provide your newborn baby with some useful newborn baby toys.

Stimulate The Mind

A well chosen newborn baby toy plays an important role in stimulating the baby’s mind, lays a strong foundation and promotes healthier growth as well as leads to the better all round development of the baby. No doubt, newborn babies spend a lot of time in sleeping and eating and it is also not unusual for them to sleep for between fourteen and sixteen hours in a day.

You can however make their waking hours more enjoyable by placing properly chosen newborn baby toys around their crib as these will help provide the baby with a good source of distraction and allow him or her to enjoy their waking moments a lot more.

As far as newborn baby toys go, it has been found that you need to place the toys at a distance that ideally is anything between eight and fourteen inches in front of the baby. If the toys are also made from bright as well as bold colors (primary) and have some patterns that contrast vividly, it would make a strong impression on the baby as well as help to stimulate the baby’s imagination.

You should also choose newborn baby toys that can move and which also emit sounds as these features help to fuel the baby’s curiosity and also helps keep them entertained. Though the newborn baby may not be old enough to hold a rattle and play with it by themselves; they will enjoy being entertained by the movement and sound of the toys.

There are also certain newborn baby toys such as a Baby Shakespeare Peek-A-Boo Mirror which help enhance the baby’s natural enchantment with faces, and such toys are almost always instant hits with most babies.

Ensuring a baby’s health places a huge responsibility on the shoulders of every parent. Toys play a vital role in the development of every newborn baby who, even at a very young age can learn things very easily. By selecting an appropriate newborn baby toy, parents can ensure that their baby gets to develop along the right lines and it can perhaps even help the baby use their logic as well as improve their skills at solving problems.

Baby Care Tip: Every Mother Can Do With One

August 31, 2008

If you are a mother that has recently given birth to a baby, you may find it to be quite strange taking care of the baby as it will be a totally new experience for you. Some mothers are also not very keen on doing the babysitting and may otherwise also be clueless about what it takes to properly care for their babies. It would pay for such mothers (and more experienced mothers as well) to make use of a baby care tips to help them learn about how to care for their newborn babies.

Bathing Frequency

The first baby care tip that every mother will need to follow is learning about how to bathe their babies. Normally, you will be advised that your baby only needs to be bathed twice or even thrice in a week, or whenever he or she becomes dirty enough to warrant giving them a bath. Other than that, there is also a need to give the baby sponge baths following a change of diapers and also after the baby has eaten a meal.

The second important baby care tip that you will need to follow has to do with how the baby should be cared for when he or she is being given a bath. It is absolutely not advisable to leave the baby on his or her own for even a single second while he is in the bathroom. Mothers and parents and baby caregivers must always be within arms length of the baby while he is in the bath.

A third baby care tip that you will have to follow is learning how to prevent your baby from suffering from diaper rash and from suffering from skin irritation. The simplest solution in this regard is to ensure that you change the baby’s diapers either prior to or after feeding him and also soon after he has relieved him. There is nothing quite as bad as letting a baby sit in dirty diapers because that is a sure way of causing him to suffer from skin irritation.

The fourth baby care tip that mothers and parents need to learn about is learning to buy diapers for the babies. It is recommended that the diapers should fit him or her without being too tight or too loose. Too tightly fitting diapers are sure to cause irritation to the skin, especially near the thighs and also around the stomach.

Besides following these and other baby care tips, as a mother and parent you also need to do your best to bond well with your newborn baby. There are also many other useful baby care tips worth learning about, and if you are interested in knowing how to address different aspects of proper baby care, you must then make it a point to read books and magazines as well as go online and search for more information in this regard.

Caring For Your Indoor Bonsai

August 31, 2008

A bonsai tree is a beautiful example of an ancient tradition. Because bonsai trees are so attractive, many people love to display them in their houses. Indoor bonsai plants will need extra care since they do not reap the full benefits of natural sunlight and natural weather conditions. Despite the fact that they look pretty tough, bonsai trees can be quite picky with their water and light requirements.

Watering Your Indoor Bonsai

When you bring a bonsai tree indoors it will require sufficient lighting to replace the natural sunlight that it would have been receiving outdoors. It’s important to place your tree in a location with good ventilation. How frequently you water your bonsai will depend on what kind it is and the condition of its soil. Many trees and plants must have wet soil, even though several others have no problem surviving drought conditions.

Your bonsai tree will thrive in high humidity, which can be achieved by regular misting. Humidity trays can be useful, but don’t let the pot sit right in the water; it should be sitting on a stand or some stones.

Pruning and Cutting

The indoor bonsai tree will still need to be regularly pruned and cut to maintain its appearance. Just because bonsai plants look frozen in time does not mean that they do not grow. A bonsai tree needs to be repotted somewhere between one to three years, depending on the type, whether it’s an outdoor or indoor plant. As well, you’ll need to give proper maintenance to the branches in order to preserve its distinctive style.

In the wintertime, you’ll likely have to reduce fertilization, depending on the type of bonsai you have. This is due to the fact that some bonsai species become dormant in this season, and will not need the level of nutrients that they do in the warmer seasons. Your indoor bonsai might not fully experience the whole cycle of seasons because it is in an artificial environment.

You need to be on the lookout for pests and other irregularities that might appear on your indoor bonsai tree. The fact that they are indoors may make them a favorite of spiders and other mites who are used to the great outdoors. It is best to gently clean the leaves and branches of your indoor bonsai plant with a damp cloth or a brush.

If you decide to make sweaters, such as Afghans, then you will need a much larger one than if you were to decide to make socks, or other small items. When choosing a bag you should always keep in mind, that your bag will be used for carrying your knitting material from place to place, so the stronger the bag you decide on, the more objects you can carry.

If you wish it to serve a dual purpose, such as a knitting bag that also serves the purpose of a purse, then look for knitting bags which come in leather, or suede. So you can choose a knitting bag that satisfies your mood or is a treat for an eye.

When choosing your knitting bag, you should always keep a track of the latest fashion and what will be your requirements. While shopping for one, it is always better to purchase a bag which has hard sides as it is easy to carry and more durable.

Instead of zippers always choose one which has a snap, this is so your knitting does not get stuck in between zippers.  It also is always better to purchase one that has a pocket or two for keeping your accessories in. If you decide on buying a large one, then always better to buy one with purse length handles, this will make it easy to carry it on your shoulders, for comfort and ease.

If you are purchasing a small bag to carry knitting materials for smaller projects. Then you need to consider one that has soft sides, this is so that you can fit extra material in it, without harming it. A drawstring or a short strap will make it easier to wrap the bag around your wrist, while carrying. If you carry bigger bags then it is possible that some of your smaller items may get misplaced.

It is not necessity to buy a knitting bag, if you are enthusiastic enough then you can make one for yourself. You could knit a bag, or even make it out of fabric. You will also find there are a lot of free patterns to choose from, if you do decide to make one. You can use any type of fabric or material to make your bag, as long as you choose a fabric that pleases you and is strong enough to carry your load.

A knitting bag not only makes you mobile, but also provides an opportunity to show your talents and latest projects to all your friends and family. Whether you be at your friends, family’s or at your home and people ask you about your latest project or your knitting talents, then you can easily teach them a stitch or two by carrying an extra needles and yarns in your knitting bag.

How To Landscape A Model Railroad

August 29, 2008

model train layout ideas

One of the more fun aspects of model railroading is planning and executing the scenery and landscaping that your track and engines will meander through ” for some it is almost like playing God in that you can decide and create on any scene you desire.

From fanciful hobbit themes, alien worlds or realistic recreations there is nothing that you cannot create and display, all it takes is a plan, some materials, a little skill and some time.

First and foremost you need a plan or at least a concept.

- Do you want to duplicate an existing landscape? - Do you want a faithful historical recreation of a place now lost in time? - Are you more inclined to creating a never-before seen or unlikely scenario to wow the masses?

Making a choice on one theme for your layout and staying true to that theme is perhaps the most important keys to success. If you change your methods and style in the middle of your landscape the result will be inconsistencies that will detract from the overall impression you are trying to form.

Ideally those you invite to view your work will see a delightful scene and the harder they look the more detail enforcing that scene they will find. Nothing is more enjoyable then hearing those delighted squeals as a viewer notices ever more subtle details as they come closer and closer  and the key to that is consistency.

Once you have a plan for the theme you need to decide on track placement and terrain. Many modelers create the terrain and then try to force the track to follow through that, just as occurs in real life ” but one of the advantages of modeling vs. real life is that you can consider all aspects and requirements up front. If you know you will have a bend or a switch at certain points why design rough terrain that you will then try to overcome with ‘grading’ in your models at those points?

Next you should collect your materials ” some items you can find around the house, others you may wish to purchase from dealers such as www.oakridgehobbies.com and www.jttmicroscale.com or your local hobby shop but always stay true to your plan. Just because you find an amazing little miniature you long to use doesn’t mean it belongs in this model!  Common materials you will need include:

1. Tables or Stands

2. Plywood (preferably  outdoor grade) for base if using stands or building model train tables

3. Glues

4. Twigs, ‘dirt’ gravel, crushed or powdered stones, herbs etc. for plants and groundcover

5. Paints of various kinds for touch-up, covering the base and backgrounds, creating model railroad water areas, etc.

6. Poster board, wax paper, aluminum foil, tissues etc. for texturing and shaping

7. Styrofoam blocks and sheets for shaping

Optional items you may wish to use include:

8. Plaster of Paris and / or fiberglass

9. Talcum powder, pepper and salt, cayenne pepper ” for texturing and colorants

10.  Corkboard and cork ‘paper’

11.  Roof repair tar (for road surfaces etc.)

12.  Paintable caulks and adhesives for securing items in place

One Vital Aspect Of Organic Gardening Is Feeding the Soil

August 28, 2008

Here is an important aspect of organic gardening and I’m sure that you will relate to it very well. Just imagine this, you are famished, you are waiting to be fed, you also have not bathed. The thing is you have spent so much time taking care of others and working, so much so you have not had time to look after yourself.

Just think how you would feel? For a certain amount of time, you might be able to accept this. You may still carry on for a while and ask for nothing in return. But as the days pass by, you will feel the negative effect this is having on you. So much so, the effect on you would be that you will not have the energy you once had. You would grow weaker and weaker, until you could no longer carry on the way you used to

Now ask yourself, how is this related to the organic method of gardening? Well that is easy, you should compare this to the state of the soil. Soil is very important in this type and for all other types of gardening. The soil is the base for everything. It is the bed, or the home of your plants

Depending on where you are located, the soil that you will have to work with will vary to a high degree. What you will need to do when choosing what you are going to grow, is only plant anything that is suitable to the soil you have available to you. When you have picked the right kind, then you are now on you way to the first steps of your gardening adventure using the organic method.

As said above, the soil must never be left untended. It must never go hungry. Or else, what happened in the example above will also happen to the soil. You need to constantly feed soil. You have to bathe it and you need to take care of it, just like how you would tend to yourself.

You will know from your school days that the soil needs water, sunlight and air. But if you do everything organically now. Does it make out any difference? Yes, it makes a lot of difference. Although you still have to feed your soil and the plants water, you will have to add something else. Whet you will need to add is organic waste placed in the soil.

Have you ever heard of composting? This is the process where you culminate decaying natural material like leaves, grasses, peelings of fruits or vegetables, even manure and fish heads, all these will act as you soils to act as fertilizer. This is the organic remember? You if you follow this way you cannot resort to anything synthetic.

Not only are you going to feed the soil, you also have to attend to it regularly. Mulching is like massaging the soil to keep its shape. This way, you will be able to get rid of the pests that your soil has got through the coming days or months.

By doing this it will actually help you prevent getting far bigger problems in your garden. There are many types of soil that you will find, they need different types of care and attention. As an example, clay can hold up water better than the sandy kind of soil. You will need to know these kind of details, so you will to be able to improve on your organic gardening adventure.

Pot grow tomatoes can be as good as those grown on the ground

August 27, 2008

I have been growing tomatoes in patio containers and pots this year with some success. I also have my beloved plot with tomatoes growing in the ground. I know the ones in the ground will work fine – they have done for thirty years. But growing my tomatoes in containers is anew departure for me.

The comparison between the pot grown tomato and those in the ground.

I grew 2 varieties this year moneymaker and an Italian cherry tomato variety. I’m sure what variety they are - everything seems to grow easily enough to me. I started off the seeds indoors in march and let them grow on in my conservatory. There were far to many plants for me alone so I gave away the surplus. I planted them out as 2 – 3 foot high plants in early June and a month later picked the first tomatoes. My tomato plant still have plenty of tomatoes on them, it has been a good year. I did notice 2 slight differences between the containers grown tomatoes and those in the ground.

Firstly the moneymaker tomatoes were slightly smaller than the ones grown on my plot.

Secondly there were not quite as many cherry tomatoes in the containers.

Other than that the results were very similar. The taste of your own tomatoes is fantastic and you will never eat better. For the container grown tomatoes

I did treat them differently and with a bit more care.

  1. Make sure you put tomato plants in a really big pot.

I like the root systems to have plenty of room and not become pot bound. You also need a big container to have enough depth for the support canes. I use standard clay terracotta pots but any wide and deep container will work fine.

  1. Water your tomatoes even if it rains.

We have had a dreadful summer in the UK this year and it has rained constantly. I still found that the pot grown tomato plants were wilting a bit if I didn’t check them for watering. The plants grown in the ground do not need this. I think what happens is that the leaves do not let the water get to the pot. They almost protect the pot from getting wet. Not much of the water can get to the roots directly. So I made sure to check them often.

  1. Be ruthless with pinching out side shoots on the tomato plants.

I only pinch out once or twice a season when growing tomatoes in the ground because they seem to do fine. I have tested this over a number of growing seasons. The moneymaker plants in pots were pinched out once a week to ensure that the fruits I did get were big enough and juicy enough. With cherry tomatoes there is no need to pinch them out as they provide plenty of fruit naturally. You can leave them alone safe in the knowledge that with regular watering they will give a good harvest.

  1. Remove excess foliage once you have the tomato fruits.

I have always done this to tomatoes and do not know where I picked this tip up. Once you have all the tomatoes set on the plant remove any leaves that are hiding the fruit from the sun. You can ripen your tomatoes indoors but I like to leave them on the plant as long as possible to get ripe. Taking the leaves away will let the tomatoes grow a bit larger.

If you have missed this tomato season then I encourage you to plan ahead for your tomato growing in 2009. Grow some in pots and containers as well as in the ground. They are a lot of fun and be grown on any sunny spot you have.

How To Use Knitting Needles And The Storage Of Them

August 27, 2008

A knitting needle is the most important bit of kit you have in the process of hand knitting. You will use them every day that you knit. They have a long shaft and are tapered at there end. The shaft and the taper have very important roles in your knitting process.

The radius of your knitting needle is how you determine its size, the size will determine the size of the stitch you are going to use. Fine needles are used for making small stitches, where as a larger needles will be used for making big stitches. If you start uneven knitting then, then you can use some of the many types that are available to you

Knitting needles come in numerous types and sizes. They were invented in the 19th century. The straight ones, are the most common used by people all over the world. It is capped at one end with a knob head and tapers at the other, you will find it most used in two dimensional fabrics mostly in squares and rectangles. Also it is used mainly for simple stitches and domestic use.

The circular knitting needle has two tapered rigid ends that are connected by a flexible cord, this cord is what holds the stitches in place, the tapered ends are used for creating new stitches.

Circular knitting is a process by which a needle with a small radius is essential uses this short type of work. Another short type is used for forming permutations in the order of stitches in cable knitting.

Different countries around the world use various different sizes of them. They have set their size standards for different types of needles. One can determine the size of one with the aid of a special gauge. Although they nearly always have their sizes written on them. Gauges have holes of different sizes in which you can insert your knitting needle to determine its size.

Knitting needles are made from materials like aluminum, steel, wood, bamboo, plastic and glass. Plastic needles have no pointed edges, therefore the are safe and ideal for children to use. Before man made materials were invented, wood and metals were the only materials available for the manufacturing of them. Some antique ones were even made using tortoiseshell, walrus tusks and ivory. But they have been banned, because of the endangered species of animals act.

Straight needles can be stored in one of the many attractive cases you can purchase. You should always use containers with padding in their bottom, this will help to keep their points sharp. Circular ones are normally kept dangling from hangers.

Despite the appearance of knitting machines in today’s market, many people still prefer to use the old style knitting needles. This is because there is nothing like having the satisfaction of making a garment with your own hands.
