Some of my Oldest and Wealthiest Teddy Bear Friends
May 31, 2008
If you would like to adopt some of my wealthiest friends and relatives, I offer my suggestions.
You should pay attention to the family tree of the teddies you wish to adopt by focusing on adopting from particular branches such as Elderly (antique), Artist, Dwarf (miniature), Regional, Royalty (limited-edition), and Actor (themed) teddies.
If you like to adopt Elderly (antique) teddies, you should pay attention to several features to be sure your teddy is not an impostor:
• Birth Certificate (label) – a very reliable way to identify your teddy.
• Shape of the Nose – elderly (antique) teddies have long noses.
• Hair – elderly (antique) teddies have mohair covering them.
• Paw Pads - elderly (antique) teddies have felt or velvet paw pads.
• Hump on the Back – very elderly (antique) teddies have a hump on their backs, between their shoulders.
• Eyes - elderly (antique) teddies have boot button or glass eyes.
• Body Seam – usually, elderly (antique) teddies have a hand-stitched seam on their tummy or their back.
• Limbs - elderly (antique) teddies have long thin arms, big feet, and wide hips.
• Internal features - elderly (antique) teddies have wood wool (wood shavings) stuffing and joints made of wood (wood or metal.
The net worth of some of my wealthy friends is a matter of public record. Here are just a few who have agreed to be listed here:
Bing 23" jointed bear with glass eyes, ca. 1917 - $1,200

Steiff 15" jointed bear with blank button in ear, ca. 1905-06 - $1,200

Farnell 11" mohair bear, ca. 1912 - $1,100

TEDDY BEARS AND BIKERS
May 31, 2008
The Cleveland Clinic’s annual Teddy Bear Run happens on Sunday. This is the 22nd year for the event, which puts an estimated 8,000 motorcyclists through the streets of Cleveland to help raise money and deliver more than 10,000 bears, toys and books and cash donations. These gifts help pediatric patients throughout the year. Motorcyclists are asked to bring teddy bears and cash donations and gather at Cleveland’s I-X Center, near Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport, at 9 a.m. and depart for the Clinic at 11 a.m. The riders are due to arrive at the Clinic around 11:30 a.m., where the teddy bears will be delivered in front of the Crile Building on East 100th Street between Carnegie and Euclid Avenues. Hospital patients and staff will be there to greet and thank the riders. Once the bears are delivered, riders will be treated to entertainment, refreshments, barbecue (for an additional $5), music and a biker fashion show on the plaza outside the Crile Building. Donations will be accepted on the spot or in advance by calling 216-448-6032. Proceeds support patient care, education and research initiatives at Children’s Hospital. The Teddy Bear Ride is sponsored by the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club and the Gold Wing Road Riders, Harley Davidson and other groups and individuals. Teddy Bear Spa
May 29, 2008
A hotel is opening in Beaulieu exclusively for guests of the small and furry persuasion.
The odd concept hotel is for teddy bears whose owners are loopy enough to pay £80 for the ‘spa getaway’, allowing the inanimate toys detox, spa treatments, excursions and gifts.
The Bartie Bristle Hotel and Spa is due to open in June, proprietor Julie Tatchell also runs a collectable bear shop.
Tatchell said: “Our vision is to create an environment where today’s over-stretched urban teddy can escape for a few days to recharge the batteries in surroundings of unashamed luxury.
“At the Bartie Bristle Hotel, we go the extra mile to do whatever it takes to restore every bear to the bright-eyed good looks and shiny coat of its youth.
“In the end I think the bears go back feeling special and that they have been rewarded for their faithfulness to their owners.”

The price includes a pot of honey on arrival, a pampering session and picnic outings. Steam baths, “bear-tox” treatments and cosmetic surgery can be arranged. “Our vision is to create an environment where today’s overstretched urban teddy can escape to recharge the batteries in surroundings of unashamed luxury,” said resort manager Julie Tatchell. No, really, she did.

Teddy Bear Train makes history
May 29, 2008
28 May 2008
A GIANT steel “teddy bear” has finished its long trek across the country to make railway history.
The 55-tonne machine travelled from South Wales to Dereham in order to have the great honour of being the first diesel locomotive of its type to be used in Norfolk.
Built at Swindon in 1964 the D9521, which is affectionately known as Teddy Bear after one of its designers Edward Bear, was rescued and restored by a syndicate of enthusiasts, and usually stays at her home in South Wales.
And after a two-day journey last Wednesday it graced the tracks of the Mid-Norfolk Railway, to ferry passengers around the county.
Peter Brennan, one of the syndicate members who lives near King’s Lynn, said: “I’m the only one who lives in Norfolk and wanted to bring teddy bear here for a holiday.
“So when I joined Mid-Norfolk Railway I asked them what they thought and they were very keen.
“There should be quite a lot of attention from people involved in railways. This is the last class of locomotive built for old British railways at the Swindon works. She’s so well built, everything is solid, she’s beautiful.
“It’s the first time a diesel Class 14 locomotive will be used in Norfolk. It’s very exciting and a unique occurrence. We’re making history.”
Teddy Bear will be staying at Dereham station for the next couple of months to take part in a series of events.
She pulled carriages over the bank holiday weekend, and on Monday children were invited to bring along their teddies to take on the train. A variety of games, such as spot the teddy, were also available.

Teddy Bear Hospitals
May 29, 2008
Teddy bear hospital is project run by medical students within the Standing Committee on Public Health of the IFMSA and within the European Medical Students Association - EMSA. It addresses to children in the pre-school age, 3-6 years, with the goal to reduce in a playful way the fear of children to visit a doctor or the hospitalisation and at the same time provides an opportunity for medical students to learn more about paediatrics and gives them a chance to work with children. The main focus of the Teddy Bear Hospital Project is to create an athmosphere of trust where children can deal with the topic “Hospital and disease”. Impressions and beliefs, which children acquire by family and media, should be seized, conceived and if necessary be corrected through playing, also by giving medical insights to children. We want to show the children, that illness and the fight against it is part of everyday-life and does not necessarily have to be experienced as threatening or frightening. The thematic main point is the meeting of child and doctor and idea that aim of every medical work should not only be the treatment, but also the building of a solid foundation of confidence between the doctor and his little patient. This aim is reached through the way Teddy Bear Hospitals works. A place (a tent, gym, hall,..)is colourfully decorated and set up as a hospital. The kindergartens of the city will be invited to visit the hospital. Usually in one Teddy Bear-Hospital of two days about 400 children could be examined with their toys. Before their visit in our Teddy Bear Hospital the nanny or nurse should discuss and talk with the children about “being ill”, physicians and hospitals. The children should think about diseases for their dolls which will be treated later in the Teddy Bear Hospital. First the children explain the history of the present illness of their teddy bear to a teddy doctor. Together they make an anamnesis and after this the teddy doctor does an “physical examination” (e.g. palpation, auscultation…) and further diagnostics ( e.g. “X-Ray”). Most teddy bears and dolls have fractures of legs and arms. After this the patient gets a medical treatment. We only practice non-invasive treatments with tapes and bandage. Finally the teddy doctor writes a prescription and the child can get some “medicine” sweets in the “Teddy Bear Hospital - Pharmacy”. Besides they have also the opportunity to explore an ambulance car. During the waiting period the children can play in a special playground and waiting area. The children are supervised by their kindergarten teachers and special paediatric nurses. For more information and how to set up your own Teddy Bear Hospital read more on the Teddy Bear Hospital Website: http://www.dsms.net/teddybear/default.asp
